Downtown Tauranga is the central business district and main shopping area of Tauranga, a city in the Bay of Plenty region of New Zealand. It is located on a peninsula between Tauranga Harbour and the Pacific Ocean, and is bounded by Cameron Road, Elizabeth Street, The Strand and Dive Crescent. Downtown Tauranga has a rich history that dates back to the arrival of the first Māori settlers in the 13th century. The area was a strategic site for trade and warfare, and was home to several important pā (fortified villages). The first European contact was made by Captain James Cook in 1769, who named the harbour “Tauranga”, meaning “sheltered anchorage” in Māori. In the 19th century, Downtown Tauranga became a centre of commerce and industry, with the establishment of a port, a railway and various businesses. The area also witnessed several conflicts during the New Zealand Wars, such as the Battle of Gate Pā in 1864. In the 20th century, Downtown Tauranga underwent several changes and developments, such as the construction of the Harbour Bridge in 1988, which connected it to Mount Maunganui. The area also experienced a population boom and a cultural diversification, as more people moved to the city for its lifestyle and opportunities.
